Jesus taught his followers, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” Many of us, however, find our experience of petitionary prayer not nearly so mechanical. Indeed, sometimes we never get what we ask for, no matter how fervently we ask. So why bring our needs and desires to God in the first place? Perhaps petitionary prayer is less about pestering God into giving us what we ask for, and more about receiving and entering into His provision. Through it we cast off the burden of self-reliance, come to a deeper understanding of God and ourselves, and take the blessing of God’s provision in our own lives out into the world to meet the needs of others.
