As a nation we worry about school shootings, the election, coronavirus, the deepening divisions that separate us, terror attacks, and more. That anxiety is constantly playing in the background of our lives. In the Bible, God doesn’t promise to take away the cause of our anxiety but God does promise to be with us when we are anxious or afraid. Students often ask me to pray for an upcoming exam. I do but I also tell them to give God something to work with. They need to study. It is also helpful for us to give God something to work with when we are afraid: Prayer, reading the Psalms, saying Compline before bed—pg 129 in the Book of Common Prayer, time in Christian fellowship, quiet, stillness, a walk at night to look at the stars, and worship.
