Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Plain: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, pray for those who abuse you. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” Even two thousand years after he spoke them, these are difficult commands. Forgiveness is choosing love instead of resentment. This choice will release us from bitterness, from that deep desire to be vindicated. Forgiveness in the Christian tradition works hand-in-hand with the work of repentance and transformation. Forgiveness is a life long process to be employed every day. We pray that we will take up the hard work of forgiveness for the sake of both wholeness and justice.
