Most of us acknowledge that we are sinners but we are comfortable with our own sins, not someone else’s. We don’t want to be lumped in with those sinners over there. In baptism, the same waters swirl around the ankles of the unwed mother, the glutton, the skinflint, and the racist. And the same water swirls around Jesus’ ankles.
In the waters of the River Jordan, we are united with all the other sinners but we are also united with Jesus Christ in his death and resurrection.
