Simeon said to Mary, “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel.” Mary had to know that if Jesus grew up to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel, there would be trouble, all kinds of trouble. Simeon went on to tell Mary, “And a sword will pierce your own heart too.” Her baby was only 40 days old, couldn’t even roll over yet, and there’s this old man, a prophet, who just told her that her son is the Messiah but he would know great troubles and she would know great pain.
When God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus, he must have chosen her not only for her virtue and good heart, but also for her strength. She would need to be strong, very strong. I expect Mary was the kind of woman who would rather know the truth, look at it straight on.
