My mother spent weeks preparing for Christmas visitors. But there were times when visitors came and she wasn’t prepared. There would be a knock at the door and a visitor would say, “I was driving by and thought I would drop in.” Those words were like a secret password that unlocked the tumblers of our door lock. There was a whole message underneath those words—“I was thinking of you and wanted to spend some time with you. I have a story or two to tell you. I would love to hear one too. We’ll laugh a little. A bit of brandy would warm me up but a cup of tea and a couple of Chips A’ Hoy would be just fine.” Those visits were grace. In the end, it’s not about how thoroughly we prepare for Jesus’ coming, but that we let him through the door and into our lives.
