Songs of the Season: Ring Out Your Joy

St. Augustine once commented that when we praise God with words, we confess the truth, but when we praise God in song, we also express our love. If you’re like me, you’re looking forward to singing Christmas hymns at church in just a few weeks because of the love and joy they bring. But we remain, for now, in the season of Advent. The Canticles, found in the prayer book on pages 85-96, are filled with the hope of the season of Advent. In the coming weeks, we will sing them together in church as we prepare for the birth of our savior. Remember to sing out with all your heart, and to engage God not only with the intellect, but with our emotions also!

About The Author

Fr. Perry Mullins is the Rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in McKinney. He grew up an Episcopalian. During college and afterward, he worked in youth ministry in San Antonio and Austin, and then entered the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest. Fr. Perry loves preaching, teaching, and outreach, and still has a heart for children’s and youth ministries. He was called to be Rector of St. Peter’s in 2017. He is married to Sarah, and they have two children.
